History

The Rural Plains Foundation (RPF) was incorporated in June 2013, as a non-profit affiliate of the Richmond National Battlefield Park’s Totopotomoy Creek Battlefield, a Civil War battlefield site containing the historic Shelton house, Rural Plains (circa 1725), a home associated with Patrick Henry through his marriage to Sarah Shelton. The Foundation received 501(c)(3) status in August 2014.

Mission

The Rural Plains Foundation seeks to preserve and promote the unique and nationally significant history and architecture associated with the Shelton property. It continues the work of the Totopotomoy Battlefield at Rural Plains Foundation, which acquired the Shelton house and farm in 2000 and donated it to the National Park Service in 2006.  RPF is charged with funding capital and interpretative improvements to Rural Plains and the surrounding 125-acre battlefield.
