Donate to the Rural Plains Foundation

Since the National Park Service acquired the Totopotomoy Creek Battlefield in 2006, nearly half a million dollars of federal funds have been spent stabilizing the house and creating interpretative trails and signs. But that isn’t enough to do all that is needed. The Rural Plains Foundation was formed to continue preserving the property, restore the Shelton House and host educational programs. We raise private funding for preservation, recruit and train volunteers and assist the National Park Service in the goal of making Rural Plains a destination for tourists and a center of education and recreation for the community.

The Foundation’s contributions so far include new interpretive signs, new brochures, an iPad Pro to aid in the production of online educational videos, and a birdhouse which recreates one featured in Civil War artist Alfred Waud’s 1864 sketch of the property.

Perhaps most importantly, donations help in the continued preservation of the Shelton House itself. Current and future projects include updating the electrical system, installing air conditioning, removing 20th century wallpaper, repairing the plaster, restoring flooring, providing ADA accessibility to the Shelton House, recreating the historic shutters for the exterior windows, and installing exhibits to help tell the full story of Rural Plains.

We also have a limited number of Rural Plains Foundation ornaments available for a donation of $35, including shipping.

Please give what you can to help us save Rural Plains for future generations! All gifts are tax-deductible, as allowed by the IRS.
